Building a scalable data platform for BI, data science and AI use cases in the construction industry

Situation

Our client, a leading European construction company, had several classic data warehouses to house its data. But this set up was limiting its ability to share data and scale new use cases across the organisation. To become more data driven, the business needed a platform that could support its existing reporting requirements, while creating room for future data science and AI initiatives.

Approach

Valcon and the client worked together to assess the situation, decide on the best approach and implement a new Azure Databricks platform. The platform was set up to serve both BI and future data science and AI use cases, with shared frameworks and best practices that made it easier for distributed teams to work in a much more consistent way than previously.

Results

The client now has a modern data platform that can support future data use cases. By creating a shared foundation for BI, data science and AI, the work helped the business take a practical step towards becoming more data driven.

  • Legacy: the approach involved replacing legacy data warehouse solutions with a modern data platform
  • Data sharing: the new approach enabled data sharing across teams and use cases
  • Foundation stone: the approach created a foundation for BI, data science and AI and future developments in these areas
  • Best practice: this meant that distribution teams were supported with shared frameworks and best practice.
